I am a part-time lecturer at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. Due to an inadvertent error in Administration, we opted to purchase the required textbooks for students on-line. Since the semester had already started, timing was a critical issue. I am happy to report that all books were received within two (2) weeks of my ordering without any problems or complications. Additionally, in all cases, the condition of the product was,in general, better than expected. I therefore highly recommend using this service.

The social security systems that, perhaps more than any other governmental programs, have characterized the development of industrial societies are under siege. On the threshold of the twenty-first century, the future of social insurance is uncertain; it may even be seriously threatened. In this important book, nine leading scholars probe deeply into the nature of social rights, trying to read the near future and locate the most meaningful and effective role that social insurance can play as today's new socioeconomic patterns develop.In-depth chapters analyse existing systems and recent and ongoing reforms in seven countries--Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, and China. There is also a chapter on the European Union's work toward a harmonised scheme to match other programs of integration, and a chapter on the all-important interpenetration of social insurance and human rights. The authors clearly demonstrate that the unprecedented challenges faced by social insurance today arise not only from changes in the patterns of society, but also from lack of confidence and ideological prejudice on the part of both academia and public policy. As a major analysis of why and how a great milestone in human progress is faltering under contemporary pressures, this book is of enormous value. It deserves to be read and absorbed by all professionals in the field who want to use their knowledge and skill to ensure a future in which every man, woman, and child is provided with opportunity to live as full a life as possible.

Broke: The Broken Contractor's Insurance System and How to Fix It Review

Broke: The Broken Contractor's Insurance System and How to Fix It
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For construction business owners, Broke: The Broken Contractor's Insurance System and How to Fix it, amounts to a powerful eye-opener in terms of the enormous risk of catastrophe taken every year as a result of a traditional, never-questioned insurance broker system that, according to author Bob Phelan, has been running what amounts to a scam (my word, not his) for decades now. If an insurance broker, for example, bids very low when asked by a construction owner for a price on next year's premium, that "savings" likely hides significant on-the-job risks that could, in a worst-case or even simply very-bad-case scenario, literally put this same owner out of business. It's all about protecting your "blind side," Phelan writes, drawing inspiration for this phrase from the career of the great defensive football star Lawrence Taylor whose spectacular line-rushing in pursuit of quarterback sacks over the years introduced this concept to the world, i.e., the ultra-high risk of neglecting one's "blind side."
Broke peppers its crisp narrative with other real-life analogies and anecdotes as well such as quoting E.J. Smith, captain of the Titanic, who said a short while before the famous accident "I've never been in any accident of any sort worth speaking about." When you add in the customer commitment philosophy of L.L. Bean, Bill Clinton's campaign slogan "It's the economy, stupid!" and lessons from the book The Black Swan, Broke's breezy and clear descriptions of the emergence of the "Risk Advisor" unveils a rather ugly picture of how bad this age-old system really is. "This game of musical chairs is all about who is going to end up holding the bag (and) which party will be exposed to the biggest risks when something goes wrong," Phelan writes. Later in the same chapter he adds, "I am endlessly perplexed as to how we ended up with a system where otherwise smart business owners bet their companies on inexperienced or incompetent insurance salespeople peddling cheap insurance."
Can this outrageously dysfunctional system be fixed, or beaten? Yes, Phelan insists, if we both understand how it really works and then commit ourselves to doing things differently. All owners of construction companies, large or small, should start learning how well they are really doing with their insurance needs as well as assess the TOTAL costs of their risks... not to mention how much profit they may be leaving on the table, year and year out. And if you think you already know all that, well my friend... think again! Broke may very well smash your long-held assumptions and cast the potential success or demise of your company in a whole new light.

The system is broken: Construction CEOs are buying contractor's insurance based on the lowest premium, and the "savings" are costing them a fortune: up to $20 lost for every claim dollar spent. The status quo can break a growing company, because brokers get paid their commission, whether or not they help prevent claims, manage risks or improves safety -- and in most cases, they don't. Contractors can go broke: driven into bankruptcy by hidden exposures and insurance loopholes that leave them blind-sided to their biggest risks. Construction Risk Advisor Robert Phelan deconstructs the broken system with common-sense ideas to fix it: ways to help prevent the high cost of low-priced coverage and keep contractors from the dangers that can bring down their business.

Plunkett's Insurance Industry Almanac 2007: Insurance Industry Market Research, Statistics, Trends and Leading Companies
Average Reviews:

the price is definitely a significant factor to consider.
at the end of the day i have to admit i was a bit disappointed. i was hoping for a comprehensive overview of the industry. however, a large chunk of of the book is devoted to providing information on select insurance companies. it appears a bit redundant, provided that the same data is available on the accompanying CD-ROM.
to be fair, they did provide a good overview of the latest trends in the industry, but that took only a few pages.
CD-ROM, was also a bit of a disappointment. the data provided therein can be easily stored on a single xls file. instead, i had to install plunkett software and jumped through hoops to extract the info i needed.
the data itself looked a bit outdated. Customer service acknowledged that, but would not provide the latest version of CD-ROM for free, despite the fact that i had bought the book only a few days ago.
for almost $300 one would expect the data/info to be more recent and comprehensive, and the service to be more accommodating.

I purchased this book because I wanted some perspective on how life insurance has evolved over the years. For a long time life insurance was considered a valuable asset... And then, almost like a flip of a switch, it became associated to seedy salesman, scams, and a waste of money.
This book has several issues that blow myths away, and show the life insurance consumer how to buy cost effective life insurance. How to place a value on your life to self determine how much life insurance you need.
All in all a good book for the life insurance buyer, and for the life insurance salesman.
