After 20 years in the military retirement transition assistance was a two week "awareness" event with almost more rumor and deception than fact.
This book has tons of facts never exposed or explained. And just the savings exposed through the (FREE!) Armed Forces Vacation Club in a one night stay pays for the book 5 times over.
Super for the four year enlistee and the 36 year retiree.

Mr. Kelly has written one of the best Life Insurance primers I have read. If you are confused by life insurance (i.e. how much and what type to own), this is a must read.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Life Insurance for the American Family: Most of What You Know About Life Insurance is Wrong

Ed Kelly is on a mission to help American families. They are grossly underinsured with their current life insurance coverage, and something must be done about it, soon. In this book, Ed exposes the 10 myths that most consumers and their current advisors hold about life insurance. Once these myths are dispelled, then the mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, insurance agents and financial planners can all move on to address the truth about Time Diversification and Tax Diversification. This book is a call for Americans to take responsibility for themselves and the real risks we all face. While most people can think of only one reason to own life insurance (to provide money for a survivor), Ed shows there are actually 1000 reasons to own life insurance, from cradle to grave. Many of these are driven by the tax advantages inherent in a life insurance policy. His mission is to drive you to a better conversation and a better meeting with your financial professional. This book will help you see life insurance from a new philosophical and practical perspective.

Modern Actuarial Theory and Practice, Second Edition Review

Modern Actuarial Theory and Practice, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Modern Actuarial Theory and Practice" is an excellent reference book for actuaries and advanced actuarial students. It provides up to date overviews of all of the main issues in the traditional areas of actuarial science, that is, investments, life insurance, general insurance (a.k.a. property and casualty insurance), pensions and health insurance, with a reference list given at the end of each chapter, to allow the reader to pursue the topic further, if so desired. Each topic is clearly explained, and the detailed index and table of contents make it easy to find what you are looking for.
This is a British text book, which was written in the context of the U.K. financial and insurance environments. However, most of the topics covered in this book are universal and as an Australian, I found this book to be just as useful as if it had been written for people in my country.
Be aware that the authors' purpose in writing this book appears to be to provide a reference for practicing actuaries or students who are about to commence practicing as an actuary. As a result, there are only a few worked examples throughout this book and no practice exercises. I am currently doing a PhD in actuarial studies, and I am also a lecturer in actuarial studies at an Australian university. I found this book to be exactly what I needed to assist me in my PhD. However, most of the material in this text is too advanced for my final year undergraduate actuarial students.

In the years since the publication of the best-selling first edition, the incorporation of ideas and theories from the rapidly growing field of financial economics has precipitated considerable development of thinking in the actuarial profession. Modern Actuarial Theory and Practice, Second Edition integrates those changes and presents an up-to-date, comprehensive overview of UK and international actuarial theory, practice and modeling. It describes all of the traditional areas of actuarial activity, but in a manner that highlights the fundamental principles of actuarial theory and practice as well as their economic, financial, and statistical foundations.

Annuities For Dummies Review

Annuities For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Annuities For Dummies by Kerry Pechter is a very readable guide to annuities that makes sense of a very complicated insurance product (and what insurance products are NOT complicated?) Pechter guides the reader through a brief history of annuities to a broad view of how they work, and on to specific facts about the various kinds of annuities available. The only slight criticism is that his presentation is a bit overly favorable toward annuities, bolstered by selective statistical examples, like the one on p. 21. Hypothetical retiree "Smith" was over-invested in bonds and cash, which do not provide protection against inflation. That is partly why hypothetical retiree "Jones" with his annuity and stocks did better. Was it the annuity or the stocks that made the difference? The logic behind the example is undoubtedly that without an annuity, Smith would want very secure investments, hence, bonds and cash. All in all, the book will help any reader make better choices regarding annuities. And it's a fun read!

As a horseperson, I want to thank Ken for his articulate research and story-telling ablility to not only cover the Horse-insurance scandle but make it an interesting mystery. I have long suspected this problem and even AHSA would like it to be swept away. Ken also tactfully covers the hoses' deaths without overtaxing the sympathetic reader. More hosepeople can go ahead and get the details on the criminal humans here. Your appendix with its list of horses, people and their outcome was as interesting as the book itself. The Power of Leveraging the Charitable Remainder Trust: Your Secret Weapon Against the War on Wealth Review

The Power of Leveraging the Charitable Remainder Trust: Your Secret Weapon Against the War on Wealth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dan's Market Street Financial Advisors office is in my neighborhood, so when I hear he was writing a book I was eager to read it and understand his approach to taxes and investing. Given the current national debate on new and increased taxes, this is an extremely timely topic. Dan provides concrete information and action plans for the average investor. I was impressed on several fronts:
1.Dan has a sharp wit and an engaging writing style. He makes a subject that most of us have never heard of easy to understand and fun to read about. His personal stories and strong opinions inspire you to take control of your money.
2.Dan shows how people remain complacent as their money is taxed multiple times. He shows how the same dollar we earn is subject to tax four different times - income tax, dividend tax, capital gains tax and estate tax. And, these taxes are all increasing in the near future! His analysis of our tax national tax situation shows the tax burden the average investor faces.
3.Dan exposes how our tax dollars are given to causes we may not support. He shows how our overtaxed dollars go to government "pork" (see table 2.1 for some unbelievable examples), making us "Accidental Philanthropists". He calls this "adding insult to injury" - tax us heavily and then spend it against our wishes.
4.Dan outlines how using two simple financial tools will prevent us from becoming accidental philanthropists. In a clear and easy to understand manner he explains how the combination of The Charitable Remainder Trust and The Cash Value Life Insurance Contract create "The Power of Charitable Leverage". These tools allow people to keep more of their money and decide how the remainder will be spent.
I consider myself an informed investor, but this was an eye opening book for me. Every American who wants to take control of how their hard earned money is spent should read Dan's book and consider his recommendations.

Honestly I originally didn't expect much from this book. However after seeing what else is out there for adjuster training books, this is by far the best resource for new adjusters. There really isn't another resource that gives you detailed and specific information about adjusting. Adjusting is a weird career and nobody seems to want to talk about it or share their insight. Thus it's extremely difficult to learn how to become an Independent Insurance Adjuster. Anyway this book is a little pricey but well worth it, at least from my perspective. This book saved me days if not weeks of research and insight into getting started as an adjuster. So I guess all and all I would say it's worth the money and definitely helped me get into adjusting a lot sooner than I would have been able to do on my own.

The world is getting increasingly complex and interconnected. Consequently it is very important for companies to manage and control their risks efficiently. Traditional risk management tools such as commercial insurance or securitization have been deemed insufficient and therefore new instruments were necessary. These are the so-called Alternative Risk Transfer and Alternative Risk Finance methods. The most widely used form is Captive Insurance. The first part in this book explains the basics of captive insurance. Different types of captives, reasons for foundation and the international captive market will be discussed. An analysis of the influence that captives have on the risk management of their parent company is the second part of the book. Companies that have founded captives recently will be examined in order to see possible influences. The last part takes a look at how captives influence the credit rating of the founding company. The theoretical and practical approaches used in this book will give the reader a solid understanding of the function and use of captives in risk management.

The Feldman method: The words and working philosophy of the world's greatest insurance salesman
Average Reviews:

If you are looking for an outstanding book on sales you've found it. At the core of Feldman's philosophy are the two key issues:
1. identifying problems people face and creating packaged solutions to those problems, and
2. articulating the problem in such a way that the prospect has to acknowledge the real consequences of the problem.
This book is no silver bullet (although if you sell insurance its about as close as you're ever going to come). However if you're willing to embrace Feldman's philosophy and work hard then I believe the results will speak for themselves.
