The World Trade Center Building Performance Study: Data Collection, Preliminary Observations, and Recommendations, has a wealth of information. Unfortunately, that information has been presented in a wholly unscientific manner that is shameful at best, criminal at worst.
For those who may be curious, Dr. Judy Wood has published the first and only forensic Investigation into the events of Sept. 11, 2001. After reading her book, 'Where Did The Towers Go?' the events behind The Destruction of the twin towers and the World Trade Center Complex will come into much sharper focus. Head over to DrJudyWood(dot)com and WhereDidtheTowersGo(dot)com for the Evidence.
The Photographs, among other evidences presented in this study, are invaluable as a resource for those who might seek to findthe 'pearls of wisdom' which are hidden under "truth's protective layers". But as a whole, this book is a work of Fiction.

Medical Billing & Coding Demystified Review

Medical Billing and Coding Demystified
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Perahaps 30 pages of the book have anything to do with medical billing or coding. The rest of the book presents a summary of everything from telephone etiquette to the duties of the office manager. This is really more of a sloppily written introduction to running the front end of a medical practice than it is a serious introduction to medical billing and coding. As such the book is really only of value to someone thinking of pursuing a job in medical practice management and just wants to get an idea of what it's all about. It's of little value for anyone actually trying to figure out how medical billing and coding actually works.

The Health Insurance Primer Review

The Health Insurance Primer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am the general reviewer and editor as well as an author for this text. This book represents the collective efforts of many insurance industry experts as well as staff of the Health Insurance Association of America (HIAA). Our objectives at the outset of this project focused on making this book "reader-friendly." Chapters are short, terminology is well defined, and topics are very organized and logically placed.
We realize health insurance is a complex subject. We attempted to put our familiarity with the subject matter aside and place ourselves in the role of the consumer. The text is written to appeal to those with minimal to moderate knowledge of health insurance matters.
This book is appropriate for a wide group of readers. We envisioned audiences well beyond the insurance industry to include students, medical providers and their staffs, attorneys and paralegals, those employed in state and federal government, and even the casual reader who seeks to increase their knowledge of such an important subject.
For those wishing to take the exam associated with this book and sponsored by HIAA, an outstanding study guide was designed. The guide will greatly assist the student preparing for the exam. It is comprehensive and covers the majority of testable concepts in the book.
I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to broaden their knowledge of the health insurance field. Reader feedback is welcomed and will be considered in future revisions.

Long-Term Care: How to Plan & Pay for It Review

Long-Term Care: How to Plan and Pay for It
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you need legal knowledge, and can find a Nolo Press book that covers the topic, just buy it. You won't go wrong. This book is no exception.
An elderly family member is facing choices about whether to enter long term care. We needed to know all the ins and outs of various options, including Medicaid, Medicare, and veterans benefits. This book covers everthing of importance in clear, concise text.
One problem in a situation like this is that the "experts", like the case managers and social workers at hospitals and nursing homes, seldom have the time or incentive to tell you the whole story. It's up to you to figure out what your options are, and what protections you have. This book covers all of the bases in clear, understandable language.
Important note: several laws and regulations regarding transfer of assets and Medicaid/MediCal coverage eligability changed in early 2006. Make sure you understand the current laws. This book was published in late 2006 and is very up-to-date.
Like I said, another winner from Nolo.

Every consumer of health care should read this book. It will change the way you look at your doctor, health care provider and insurance company ... and not in a good way but in a way that you can start to understand what is being done to us.
Mr. Torinus bursts the bubble of costs and quality revealing the inner workings of our flawed system. Surprisingly, he does not only endorse his method as the solution but offers several different working plans that address the high cost of health care.
An insightful read well worth the price. I bought a copy for our HR director.

Even with new health-care policies, one thing is clear: health-care costs will continue to rise dramatically. While individuals may get better coverage, businesses will have the same problem they've had for the last four decades. Health care, one of corporate America's largest expenses, is growing at double-digit rates, and nothing done in Washington will change that. But one medium-size company set out to tame the beast of rising health-care costs, employing best practices and cutting-edge ideas. The results have caused others to sit up and take notice. Serigraph, Inc., a Wisconsin-based manufacturer of decorative parts, and its chairman, John Torinus, did what Washington can't or won't do: reduce cost increases to less than 2 percent while improving the quality of health care for its employees. The implications for corporate America are staggering--the opportunity for genuine reform in an expense category that has been spiraling out of control.Serigraph began its initiative to control health-care costs in 2003, when its annual health-care bill was $5 million and another $750,000 was needed for the projected 15 percent annual increase. The company employed three strategies for reform, each of which can cut the health-care bill by 20 percent to 40 percent--consumer responsibility, the primacy of primary over specialty care and centers of value. Applied in concert with other management methods, these three approaches almost eliminated growth in health-care costs while improving the quality of employee care. The results are documented. They are beyond refute. "The Company That Solved Health Care" describes the fascinating details of Serigraph's program, and shows how any company can achieve similar results. This book is essential reading for any manager responsible for his or her company's health-care expenses, any academic or thinker involved in the health-care debate and anyone who wants to better understand why health-care costs have been rising and what can be done to achieve price stability while improving patient care.

The New Health Care System: Everything You Need to Know (Thomas Dunne Books)

David Nather captured the structure of the Affordable Care Act in his book The New Health Care System, Everything You Need to Know. Nather communicates complex concepts in clear, easy-to-read language. Nather's writing is as engaging as it is empowering. With The New Health Care System, Everything You Need to Know, Nather created a starting point for an early foray into a complex law that will impact all Americans. Nather's book is equally useful for those comfortable with public health and health care delivery. I have a Master degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. I consider Nather's book critical to the academic and general communities' understanding of this law. I look forward to David Nather's next edition as regulations and policies shape the implementation of this critical legislation.

Real Estate Valuation is written from the perspective that principles and applications are more important than processes. While detailed solutions are included for a wide variety of appraisal problems, the emphasis is always on the principle, not on how to crunch the numbers through a "formula." The goal is to teach students to think about valuation in a logical, intuitive way, so they can creatively solve real-world problems.

Lowell "Duke" Embs was a top salesman for one of the largest insurance companies in America--Connecticut Mutual. In 1981 his superiors confronted him and told him that they wanted him to resign--after 26 years of excellent sales history--before retirement.
When he refused, the company began a series of incarcerations, using the mental health industry to intimidate and coerce Mr. Embs into submission. He was beaten several times and his ribs were broken twice. He refused to give in, and the price he paid was tremendous.
Even though some of the mental health workers found him completely sane and unsuitable for retention, it was possible under the law to hold him for various periods of time; thus, while he was able to get free from time to time, it was usually only a matter of days before police would stop him in his vehicle and rearrest him on sometimes phoney charges--all at the behest of a giant insurance company.
"Duke" Embs' story is a cautionary tale for all of us who like to believe we're actually safe and free, as it is the truly scary account of an honest, hardworking salesman who was repeatly abused in the worst possible ways by a blind mental health industry and a megacorporate tyranny--all in order to not have to pay retirement to a faithful employee of 26 years.
In a letter to the author, Tipper Gore writes: "This book provides a unique insight into the conditions of mental health facilities and truly moving and thought-provoking personal accounts of being 'committed'. Your story will stay with me as I continue to fight for the changes we so desperately need in our nation's mental health care system."

Landmark: The Inside Story of America's New Health Care Law and What It Means for Us All (Publicaffairs Reports) Review

Landmark: The Inside Story of America's New Health Care Law and What It Means for Us All (Publicaffairs Reports)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a family physician that has followed the healthcare reform debate closely, dating well back into the Democratic primary season when Hillary and Obama were duking it out, dating even as far back as the failed Bill and Hillary Clinton first attempt during Bill Clinton's presidency. I found Landmark: The Inside Story of America's New Health Care Law to give a much richer historical perspective, and to give a much better analysis of the actual impact that the bill is likely to have, than was available from the fragmented and sensational mainstream media coverage.
The book is a collection of essays written by Washington Post reporters, followed by the actual text of the bill. The essays in the book are far more analytical and informative than what was typically available throughout the somewhat histrionic coverage of Republican and Democratic maneuvering to respectively block or pass the eventual bill. One could have been left with the impression, when it was all over but the shouting, that the resulting bill was weakened to the point of being inconsequential from the point of view of reform, and enormous regarding eventual cost. Read Landmark, and you'll have a different opinion on both those points.
What was useful in the book? The many failed historical efforts to provide some form of national healthcare coverage go back over 100 years, a battle that until this last month stymied many presidents (including Teddy Roosevelt). The historical review alone made the book a worthwhile read for me. Secondly, the authors make a convincing case that, much in contrast to the typical media coverage, this bill represents a deep and broad change in the American approach to healthcare for its citizens, far more so than the Medicare and Medicaid legislation. After reading the essays, and even more powerfully after reading the actual legislation, I'm convinced that the authors are correct. Why? Though it is true that the bill is corrupted in places by special interests, and weakened by the deletions forced by political compromise, it also becomes clear that through a combination of fiat and incentive the new healthcare law will, for better or for worse, markedly change the way doctors/providers do business, and how their patients/clients experience their healthcare.
Fiats? No exclusion for pre-existing conditions, no excisions from insurance because you actually USE what you've purchased, no lifetime limits on coverage just because you actually got sick. Incentives? Buried in the legislation itself is a long list of encouragements to do what amounts to serious R & D (research and development) in methods to improve American health, and to treat American illness. In a country where 85% of health related research is done by notoriously biased private industry (the reverse of the ratio in Europe), creating conditions more amenable to less biased scientific research is a welcome and little discussed part of bill. Creating incentives for physicians/providers to focus on quality will change what you experience when you go in for healthcare, and this book details what you will be seeing change over the next few years.
As a socially liberal, financially conservative physician (voted for Reagan, actually went to his inaugural parade) my bottom line about Landmark is this: whether you love or hate the bill, your perspective on it will be different, and better balanced, when you are done reading it. Your ability to discuss the bill accurately will be significantly enhanced, as I've already found out on multiple occasions when confronted with nonsense statements from both the left and the right. If you wish to consider yourself informed on the Healthcare Reform Bill, this book will go a long way to getting you there.

The Washington Post's must-read guide to the health care overhaul What now? Despite the rancorous, divisive, year-long debate in Washington, many Americans still don't understand what the historic overhaul of the health care system will—or won't—mean. In Landmark, the national reporting staff of The Washington Post pierces through the confusion, examining the new law's likely impact on us all: our families, doctors, hospitals, health care providers, insurers, and other parts of a health care system that has grown to occupy one-sixth of the U.S. economy. Landmark's behind-the-scenes narrative reveals how just how close the law came to defeat, as well as the compromises and deals that President Obama and his Democratic majority in Congress made in achieving what has eluded their predecessors for the past seventy-five years: A legislative package that expands and transforms American health care coverage. Landmark is an invaluable resource for anyone eager to understand the changes coming our way.

Social Security and Its Enemies: The Case for America's Most Efficient Insurance Program
Average Reviews:

I can't top some of the great reviews here, but let me just say this is a readable and even fun debunking all the smear efforts of conservatives, business interests, and libertarians who want to "save" social security.
Too often I've heard intelligent people quote distorted and misleading information about social security gleaned from the press (which itself parrots anti-social security thinktanks). I'm sad to say I was one of those people.
Then, as the bankruptcy date was revised to be later and later, I began to suspect something was not quite right with the doomsayers. I hoped Skidmore's book would tell the real story, and it did.
One cautionary note: though published less than two years ago, some of the information in the book is now dated. For instance, Skidmore reports that in 1998, the trustees moved the dreaded depletion year from 2029 to 2032. While that is true, new readers should be aware that the date has since been moved to 2038!

Most Americans would be astonished to discover that the most efficient insurance program in the world—in the history of the world, in fact—is the United States Social Security system. No private insurance company can come close to the returns Social Security has generated—ninety-nine cents on every dollar that comes in. Moreover, Social Security has never failed to send checks when they fall due, a sterling record that private industry cannot begin to match. Yet Americans have been told for years that Social Security is going bankrupt, that all of its funds will be exhausted in a matter of years. Social Security and Its Enemies explains why these widely held beliefs are mistaken, and how it is that much of the public has come to accept them.In a book remarkably free of technical or social science jargon, Max Skidmore examines the politically contentious passage of the original Social Security Act in 1935, and the continuous political and ideological battles the program has faced over the last 60 years. Without resorting to polemical debates comparing conservative and liberal views of Social Security, Skidmore demonstrates exactly why Social Security is in no danger of going bankrupt and proposes a series of incremental adjustments that will allow the system to support future generations even better. Social Security and Its Enemies shows that, far from being a system on the verge of collapse, Social Security in fact does exactly what it was created to do: keep America's aged (and later her infirm, disabled, or orphaned) out of poverty without prejudice and with universal access.

Statistical Analysis of Extreme Values: with Applications to Insurance, Finance, Hydrology and Other Fields Review

Statistical Analysis of Extreme Values: with Applications to Insurance, Finance, Hydrology and Other Fields
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The second edition came out in 2001 and although my previous review is listed here it refers to the first edition. Professor Reiss sent me a copy of the second edition and I browsed through it to see what has changed. Except for the words "Second Edition" in the upper left corner of the cover page the cover is the same as the original. A closer look through the text shows that there are substantial changes. The original text was 316 pages long with 35 references and a CD Rom on the back page. The new edition is 443 pages with 51 references and a CD Rom on the back page (this is version 3.0 of Xtremes).
The preface to the second edition tells you precisely what is added. There are 8 new contributing authors who are Stuart Coles , Jurg Husler, Daniel Dietrich, Dietnar Pfeifer, Humberto Vaquera, Jose Villasenor, Pieter van Gelder and Dan Lungu and apparently the two main authors will encourage more contributors for a third edition. The authors are very much interested in demonstrating applications of extreme value theory using their Xtremes software and generously invite others to join in.
The structure and theme of the book has not changed. Section I on modeling and analysis has replaced the section on robust statistics with a section called heavy and fat-tailed distributions. The sections are slightly longer in the second edition. Chapter 2 has an additional section called the auto-tail-dependence function.
Part II on inference for parametric models includes a whole new chapter on Poisson Processes (Chapter 7). In Part III on multivariate methods, Chapter 9 on multivariate maxima includes a new section on the Gumbel-McFadden Model and Chapter 10 a new section on bivariate peaks over a threshold.
Part IV on topics in Hydrology, Insurance and Finance is totally revised and consists of Chapters 11-14 in place of the original Chapters 9-11. The old Chapters 9 and 10 are now Chapters 12 and 13 respectively.
In Part V there are again five case studies but they are totally new ones with the new authors that are acknowledged in the preface.
In the appendix they have replaced the description of the XPL programming language with the StatPascal language.
