This book should be mailed in a brown paper wrapping to avoid insurance agents from finding out why their clients are becoming so knowledgable. Alan Abler has taken a complex profession and organized the automotive aspects into an understandable and logical way of looking at the industry in a way that can save us all a little cash. This book must be read by all automobile drivers and those who haven't are foolish. My wife and I have taken Alan's advice and are in the process of reevaluating our policy and setting up a meeting with our agent. Take my advice and buy the book.

Tobias is a thoughtful and intellegent analyst who lays out an excellent program that would stop punishing responsible motorists. I have read his invetment guide books and many of his magazine articles as well, and I consider him a consumer advocate of the highest order.
14% of the drivers in the USA are uninsured (based on 1997-1999 data), as are 22% of those in California, where Tobias tried to implement his plan in 1993 shortly after this book was published. To exacebate the problem, the uninsured drivers are typically the ones who are the greatest risk. I've been victimized by such a driver, and I'm sure many of you reading this have been as well. Sure, his system isn't perfect, but it is better than the programs that most states have now.
I read a follow-up article by Tobias in the aftermath of the California initiative. It turned out that the successful campaign against his proposal was heavily funded by insurance companies and attornies. You may draw your own conclusions.

The Wages of Sickness: The Politics of Health Insurance in Progressive America (Studies in Social Medicine)
Average Reviews:

This is a great look at the progressive era politics that lead to the rejection of compulsory health insurance. It is not a very difficult read but is very well researched and is vital to any one who wants to understand either the progressive era or the history of the health care debate.

The Clinton administration's failed health care reform was not the first attempt to establish government-sponsored medical coverage in the United States. From 1915 to 1920, Progressive reformers led a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful crusade for compulsory health insurance in New York State. Beatrix Hoffman argues that this first health insurance campaign was a crucial moment in the creation of the American welfare state and health care system. Its defeat, she says, gave rise to an uneven and inegalitarian system of medical coverage and helped shape the limits of American social policy for the rest of the century.
Hoffman examines each of the major combatants in the battle over compulsory health insurance. While physicians, employers, the insurance industry, and conservative politicians forged a uniquely powerful coalition in opposition to health insurance proposals, she shows, reformers' potential allies within women's organizations and the labor movement were bitterly divided. Against the backdrop of World War I and the Red Scare, opponents of reform denounced government-sponsored health insurance as "un-American" and, in the process, helped fashion a political culture that resists proposals for universal health care and a comprehensive welfare state even today.

Insurance and Risk Management Strategies for Physicians and Advisors Review

Editor Dr. David Edward Marcinko, MBA CFP® CMP(tm)
Publisher: Jones and Bartlett Publishers
ISNN: 0-7637-3342-3
Format: Soft cover 332 pp
Review Date: October 27, 2008
This is an excellent book edited by Dr. David E. Marcinko; MBA, CMP(tm) to assist health care administrators, physicians and their advisors with the complex issues of insurance and risk management. It is a multi authored book that contains detail information and comprehensive views on a broad range of strategies.
The fifteen chapters cover a broad range of topics, from insuring physicians, their property and practice to covering such complex topics as medical records and health care compliance. Furthermore,
the book addresses other important issues like sexual harassment, workplace violence and risk management in the modern medical practice.
This book is well written and precise. In addition to addressing the topics mentioned above, various authors enlighten us abut medical malpractice and tort reforms issues and promotes the so-called "Capitation Liability Theory." The innovative CLT approach suggests that fixed rate reimbursement systems reduce the incidence of malpractice liability.
Assisting medical professionals in these tumultuous times, advisors need to sharpen their skills on the unique items affecting physician clients. The book is comprehensive and informative and an excellent source of information that provided me a better understanding and perspective on insurance and risk management - not only from the perspective
of a Certified Financial Planner®, but also how it correlates to most physician's unique situations.

Average Reviews:

This book does contain some definitions and explanation of health insurance conventions that may be helpful to many. For instance I found the explanation of what to expect from Medicare and the info on Medigap policies informative. As for advice, there are few insights here, mostly platitudes and generalities that should be obvious to anyone (like "read the policy terms"!) Far worse, the text in this book is EXACTLY IDENTICAL to the book "Health Insurance Made E-Z" - so DON'T BUY BOTH!

Average Reviews:

Just a quick review, for lack of time ...
I borrowed this book from the library, and have been thumbing thru it, reading a chapter here and there.
My impression- not worth the money if you have to pay- possibly not even worth the time. The text is mostly a tutorial on various aspects of insurance, with very little specific advice.
A lot of pleasantries, few revelations. I dd not really find it that useful.
A better book- get the old (1988?) Consumer Reports Guide to Life Insurance- they give ratings, specific advice.

Earthquake Insurance in Turkey: History of the Turkish Catastrophe Insurance Pool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are an American, and live in an earthquake region, you have probably dealt with issues of insurance. But the American experience is far better than that of Turkey. Which lacked affordable earthquake insurance for much of its population. With catastrophic results in recent years. The book explains an attempt to remediate this sorry state of matters. By the forming of an insurance pool, that basically acts as an insurer of first resort for many Turks.
We see how the fund had to explain in a marketing campaign the need for insurance to the Turkish public. And how there was a gradual increase in public confidence in the viability of the entire concept. Political tensions are also studied, exemplified by minimal support from the major parties. It is unclear why this has been so.

The persistent potential for large scale natural disasters has become a real concern for the Turkish government since the late 1990s, which ultimately led to the establishment of the Turkish Catastrophe Insurance Pool (TCIP). Among the main rationale of the creation of the TCIP were a grave government fiscal exposure to natural disasters and a disproportionately low level of catastrophe insurance penetration for such a disaster-prone country. Since the commencement of this program in 2000, the TCIP has provided coverage to more than 2 million households, being by far the largest insurance program in the country. In four years, the TCIP has managed to become one of the most trusted brand names in the Turkish insurance industry, and one of the largest catastrophe insurance pools in the world. Its success has also brought an international recognition, inspiring more than a dozen of countries world wide. The TCIP experience has also been a watershed for the World Bank as it has led to a rethinking of the roles of ex ante risk management relative to ex post donor support. This book presents the main technical imperatives and challenges in the development and the implementation of the TCIP and shows how a public-private partnership may be the way forward in the financing of natural disasters. If offers valuable advise and guidelines to policymakers involved in the development of catastrophe insurance programs.

'Gotcha': International Marine Insurance Fraud and Conspiracy Review

'Gotcha': International Marine Insurance Fraud and Conspiracy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Very little insight into international marine insurance or any fraud attached to it will be gained from reading this badly written book. Geary appears to be a yacht surveyor in the Caribbean, a very small part of marine surveying, the book is a catalogue of his exploits in this area and is a thinly veiled advertisement for using his services. There is nothing in here about the day to day practice of international, commercial marine insurance and marine surveying as applied to merchant vessels, which he appears not to know about or to have participated in. As for the problems with Salvage Association or Lloyd's agency , which the cover of the book says he will reveal, what he says is laughable and does not bear any other comment.Reading this book will not give anyone any insight into marine insurance or its problems and certainly not commercial marine surveying, except, perhaps if they own a rather small yacht in the West Indies

STEAL, CHEAT, AND LIE YOUR WAY TO THE TOP--a growing practice on both sides of the Atlantic that's costing consumers millions each year. Marine insurance is based on Uberrimae Fidei or utmost good faith but it hasn't worked out that way. Author Ed Geary closely examines the schemes of marine insurance fraud and conspiracy that involves not only boat owners and policy holders, but insurance brokers, and marine underwriters. During his five year USCG training mission of the Venezuelan Coastguard Geary's disclosure of the Central Intelligence Agency's clandestine Operation Deep Six to destabilize the elected government of Venezuela and install Hugo Chavez as president put him in the cross-hairs of the Agency. Silencing him became an even greater priority when Geary exposed the CIA's theft of high value yachts used in idiotic schemes to smuggle narcotics from Colombia to the United States. Gotcha delves into the flawed business practices of The London Salvage Association that ultimately destroyed an organization that's been around before the reign of Queen Victoria and exposes the fraud and "trickle-down-corruption" that has tainted the Lloyd's Agency System. After the melt-down of ENRON and WorldCom the cover-up of Arthur Andersen's fraudulent ship valuation conspiracy by the once reliable Lloyd's List in London challenges the imagination.

Oklahoma Property and Casualty Insurance License Exam Manual Review

Oklahoma Property and Casualty Insurance License Exam Manual
Average Reviews:

I have always loved Kaplan, using them for test preps from the ACT to GRE. This, however, was not their strong suit. Using the P/C test prep from Kaplan was not a good experience. The book is organized in a fairly good fashion. However, the way the chapters read are near impossible to decipher and understand. The chapters do not go in depth, and the review questions at the end sometimes ask questions that were not covered in the material. For my Life, Accident, and Health, I used both Kaplan and a different book, the Kaplan material was way behind the current standards (16 CE instead of 24 hours). The Kaplan test cd for the life health did not cover materials or questions from the state test. Luckily, I still passed it thanks to the other materials. If you really need to study and cannot afford the high paying classes from StoneCE, I would recommend this. However, I do discourage this book as it does not seem to help me at all. I am having to push back my scheduled test date so I can get other materials because this book does not and has not helped.
