This book shows the problem with internet book orders. I bought it off the title and cover. When it arrived, not only was it extremely thin (think comic book thin) but it is just pure drivel.
It is just the author wanking away about how he has had a happy life. It covers nothing at all about the insurance business. You could get more information just doing a Google search.
I give it one star because it makes a good coaster for my Dr. Pepper as I read books that give much more real world knowlege...like The Dilbert Principle.

Vulture Culture: Dirty Deals, Unpaid Claims, and the Coming Collapse of the Insurance Industry Review

Vulture Culture: Dirty Deals, Unpaid Claims, and the Coming Collapse of the Insurance Industry
Average Reviews:

This is a timely and important book. Although insurance companies have been getting much bad press the last few years, especially after Hurricane Katrina, this is the first place it has been this thoroughly documented in one place. It's well-written and easy to read. The author doesn't solely regurgitate facts but goes through numerous case studies so you can see countless individuals have been sacrificed to corporate greed and corruption. The title seems a little over the top, but is based on an actual award given out by an insurance company for people who cut down on claims!
Before reading this book, I wasn't sure insurance companies deserved all the bad press they've gotten. Now I know they deserve even more than they get! I was really saddened to read about the heart-wrenching stories related to long-term care and sick children.
Caveat emptor when buying insurance. Read the fine print in your policies carefully, and check out your insurance company. Consumer ratings can be eye opening.

Deadly Spin: An Insurance Company Insider Speaks Out on How Corporate PR Is Killing Health Care and Deceiving Americans Review

Deadly Spin: An Insurance Company Insider Speaks Out on How Corporate PR Is Killing Health Care and Deceiving Americans
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Health care continues to limp on in the United States. We are ranked 46th out of all the Top 50 nations for health care in the world. Part of the issue is that health care is run like any other business and yet it isn't truly a business--profiting on someone's else's health or denying coverage for a pre-existing condition (or stating that a technique is experimental when, in fact, it isn't so as to deny coverage and keep the patient alive)is a form of gambling but it gambles with people's lives which makes it Wendell Potter worked for what he would probably characterize as the "enemy" now for over twenty years. As a PR executive he would weave lies into a positive "truth" for the company he worked for (Cigna) making it appear that they were always doing the right thing for their patients. Using statistics to lie is one thing (for example dropping people off the unemployment rolls that are reported to make it appear that the nation is covering when it isn't)but Potter would often twist the truth or help craft messages to appeal to middle America to scare the public from reform in health care.
One day Potter had an awakening and realized what he was doing was wrong leaving the industry that had nurtured him and becoming an advocate for proper health care and a government based system to force corporations to play fair. He just couldn't stomach hiding greed behind the veneer of double speak falling into a rabbit hole with language that only George Orwell would recognize. He chronicles his rise in the industry and his disillusionment and how the media is manipulated, patients, government to make decisions that are profiting major corporations at the cost of our health and lives. This is as much the story of his awakening as it is about the PR manipulation of the public around health care issues and trying to demonize the discussion of universal healthcare as part of the debate.
Potter's exceptional book "Deadly Spin" takes us behind-the-scenes into the wheeling and dealing that goes on with multiple PR flacks that try and spin doctor any change that threatens their profit as bad for the average consumer. Potter gives us a history of the PR game to help us understand WHY and HOW this is unethical (especially by the ethics guidelines dicated by the PR association).
The health care industry from health plans to pharmaceuticals have for too long had access to lawmakers (using the money that we pay them) to push forward their own agenda and "buy" politicians in Washington; that's nothing new it just just become more blatant than before. Using misinformation, front groups to suggest that any sort of reform is bad, these organizations have been directing America down a path with overgrown foilage and rough terrain where the patient must always suffer. Potter's book takes the curtain that these companies hide behind and let's us see the thought process, innner workings and how misinformation manipulates the public to make the wrong choices while allowing politicians to make those choices knowing they are wrong without ramifications.
Is "Universal Healthcare" the way to go? I don't know but I do know that the insurance industry is scared of it. Potter points out how people like him would manipulate the media and politicians to paint Universal Healthcare as "communist" or "socialist" in nature to taint any and all intelligent discussion about the positives and negatives scaring people away before dialog had even begun.
Potter suggests that having some sort of system like this in place would be helpful in redefining the way we take care of our health. The recent changes with Obama Care he points out aren't perfect but is a step in the right direction (--his complaint was that corporate America shaped it (this is Potter's opinion mind you I don't know that I agree with him on this point but it is food for thought).
I don't know that I agree with all of Potter's suggestions (for example I think that given our economy Obama Care should have been a lower priority--right in the middle of the worst economic downturn in ages-- and when it did become a priority it was so badly compromised that the changes--small as they were and some positive--are meaningless in the over all big picture)but I have to admire him for waking up from the money inspired opiate-like dream that has entranced everyone else in his former industry. I also feel that Potter would have done better to give us more in depth examples of why the system breaks down consistently but what we do get is pretty embarrassing.
Regardless of where you stand on healthcare-- if you believe or don't believe in universal healthcare--Potter's book is essential reading for understanding the flaws in our system and how corporate profit continues to dictate who gets coverage, who doesn't and why we are ranked so poorly compared to other nations when it comes to health care.
Recommended.

Fundamentals of Risk and Insurance Review

Fundamentals of Risk and Insurance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, I guess I can try to review this book from the only perspective I read it from: that of a student. I had to read it for my CFP class on Insurance, and, as an introduction to most forms of insurance, it explains the forms in a very methodical and systematic way; it was very easy to follow and tough to get completely lost.
Honestly, I was never really fascinated with insurance. My life-licensing class was 24 hours of classroom time spread out over one weekend, so maybe that has created some insurance-related intellectual scars. The sections on Life Insurance and the basic components of any insurance contract and the whole insurance process were already familiar to me, so I found those sections incredibly uninteresting. The other forms of insurance were much more interesting and gave me a great foundation for other insurance studies I've done since.
The prose of the book, too, flows extremely well. In fact, I usually just lightly read passages explaining computations and formulas because I come back later to review them in-depth; however, while reading this book, I actually felt I fully understood most of the computations even while I read (which almost never happens because most formula-explaining reads much like Kant's "Metaphysics of Morals").
Just one closing point... I guess you'd have to be either Insurance Commissioner or a professor of insurance to be really interested in this material, but the authors write in a way that allows even the average CFP or insurance student to come away from the book with a good sense of how insurance works and where it fits into an individual's financial plan.

This consumer-oriented textbook addresses the principles of risk management without skimping on the discussion of insurance. It summarizes the nature of pure risk on the individual and on society and illustrates how insurance can be used to deal with the problems posed by such risk. Mirroring the diverse experience of its authors, the text is equally effective in presenting the principles of insurance theory and offering how-to advice to students. Throughout, the main emphasis is on the insurance product and the use of insurance within the risk management framework. The traditional fields of life insurance, health insurance, property and liability insurance, and social insurance are treated in terms of their relationship to the wide range of insurable risks to which the individual and the business firm are exposed.

In regard to "Exam Cram, Life and Health" I would recommend this book to my adult children if they want to pass the California exam. In addition to being a great test preparation book, I was able to get my computer to read the book to me, by using Adobe and Microsoft text-to-speech programming, which is free to the general public. This book was much better than the text provided by the school. It even includes information needed to open my own business.
Good luck, Bob.

The scope of Economics of Property-Casualty Insurance rests on the title phrase. Buy this book if you need a direct definition of causes, consequences, and external variables regarding actuarial mathematical conclusions. Do not buy this book if you need a brief and general overview about "the math that actuaries use to rate stuff." In addition, the passive voice and run-on sentences may lose you in a string of thoughts. However, if you understand the P-C Industry very well, you'll probably follow the process just fine.

The Economics of Property-Casualty Insurance presents new research and findings on key aspects of the economics of the property-casualty insurance industry. The volume explores the industrial organization, regulation, financing, and taxation of this business. The first paper, on external financing and insurance cycles, contains a wealth of information on trends and patterns in the industry's financial structure. The last essay, which compares performance of stock and mutual insurance companies, takes a fresh look at the way a company's organizational structure affects its responses to different economic situations. Two papers focus on rate regulation in the auto insurance industry, and provide broad overviews of the structure and economics of the insurance industry as a whole. Also addressed are the system of regulating insurance companies in the United States, who insures the insurers, and the effects of tax law changes in the 1980s on the prices of insurance policies.

As a career counselor therapist I greatly value this book. The reason I am writing this review is because of the unfair review written by someone else referring to the author's choice to borrow start up money. The purpose of this book is not to promote borrowing funds to start a business. I use the book to counsel clients who are considering a career change into the insurance field. It discusses important topics such as agency ownership versus being an employee, compares different company contracts, product selection, etc. Proper education and evaluation can greatly reduce career change anxiety and minimize down side risk. This book, whether you choose to borrow start-up funds or not, will give you the info needed to make a confident career choice. Since 80% of new businesses fail in two years and many borrow money to start their business it is not a "given" that this author's choice to borrow money make his success easier...only more risky! Minimize your risk if you are considering a career choice into the insurance field and read this book!

New Life Insurance Investment Advisor: Achieving Financial Security for You and your Family Through Today's Insurance Products Review

New Life Insurance Investment Advisor: Achieving Financial Security for You and your Family Through Today's Insurance Products
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm an avid reader and have ordered dozens of books through Amazon, but this is the first one I've taken the time to write a review for, because I believe this book can help others in the same situation I was.
I ordered this book when I was applying for Life Insurance, based on the investment strategy in Douglas Andrew's book, "Missed Fortune 101". I wanted to review another reference on life insurance to learn more about it, and to corroborate Andrews' strategy. This is the only other book I could find that discussed LI from a financial investment perspective. This is a very comprehensive book about LI. It's a large book, and so far I've only read portions, skipping around to the areas I needed to understand the type of policy I was applying for, and to justify in my mind that indeed it was the right one for me (I'm working with a financial planner who recommended a particular plan, and has largely focused his practice on Doug Andrews' strategy). This book gave me a lot of the information I needed to ask my agent questions about my policy. In fact, he was impressed with my questions and wanted the name of this book.
This is a very easy to read book, with plenty of *understandable* tables as examples. I have also found it to be very objective, discussing the tradeoffs of the different types of policies, and discussing in what personal situations a particular policy might be best. The intent of this book is clearly educational - there's no hidden agenda or bias that I can detect. The author has CFP, CLU, and CHFC credentials.
Finally, and very importantly, this author stresses the need to manage your life insurance policy over time, as you would any other investment - especially the flexible aspects of policies, and including, where necessary, 1035 transfers to a more appropriate policy.

"For anyone who needs to understand different types of life insurance, as well as considerations forpurchasing and managing policies, this book should be on your nearby reference shelf. If you'vefrequently found yourself fumbling around with terminology, such as the differences between variable, universal, and variable universal life (VUL) policies, you'll finally see some light through the haze."- MorningstarAdvisor.com

Life insurance doesn't have to be complex or intimidating. Ben Baldwin's completely revised and updated guidebook makes it clear and logical, discussing how to analyze insurance products based on their investment merits and best overall financial returns. This clear, authoritative resource for consumer insurance information covers the pros and cons of Internet purchases, techniques to use capital within a policy, the fixed premium feature, insurance for different stages of life, and the new emergence of "immediate annuities."

Insurance: From Underwriting to Derivatives: Asset Liability Management in Insurance Companies (Wiley Finance)
Average Reviews:

In Insurance from Underwriting to Derivaties, Eric Briys and Francois de Varenne, both Deutsche Bank insurance experts, have written a highly technical, albeit readable, book for their professional peers. They discuss property-casualty insurance, risk, securitizing, pricing and liabilities duration in the United States and Europe. However, it will dawn on the casual reader fairly early that there should be an "experts only" label on the book jacket. Even the basic introduction to property-casualty insurance begins with the presentation of complex mathematical models. More daunting models, charts and graphs elucidate information throughout. Insiders will appreciate this data and the extensive footnotes and references. While this may not be a book for the mid-management reader, we assure you, without risk, that its target audience - financial executives and professionals in the insurance industry - will be very glad to have it.

Property and Casualty Insurance License Exam Cram Review

Property and Casualty Insurance License Exam Cram
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Predicated upon the glowing description of the "Exam Cram Property and Casualty Insurance License Exam" test manual, I decided to purchase it to
augment other test guides in preparation for my upcoming Property/Casualty
Insurance Producer's exam.
I have no complaint with the book itself; with the exception of no state-specific material, it seems fairly comprehensive.
I do, however, have a serious complaint about the CD-ROM Exam Simulator
which is inoperable, based upon an evaluation generated by the CD itself,
indicating that all but one of the .dll files had not been loaded.
I contacted Pearson's (the publisher's) Customer Service department, and
was given several different options, one of which was to send (1) the original receipt from Amazon (fortunately, I made copies); (2) a Xerox of the back cover, showing the ISBN number; and (3) my name, address, and
phone number.
Trustingly, I sent these data, assuming Pearson would send me a fully-loaded CD-ROM which I could use on my computer.
Naturally, they did no such thing, instead, counselling me to "return the book to Amazon for a refund or an exchange." (I informed them that the fault lay with them - not Amazon - and exchanging the book might cause me to receive another CD-ROM that was equally defective.)
My last e-mail to them was March 26th; to date, I have not heard from Pearson, and probably never will.
I told them that it was foolish to incur the ill-will of a customer who
might have given them repeat business, but evidently, the customer's sensibilities (over a defective product) are of little moment to a publishing conglomerate.
I shall keep the book (because I need it), but the memory of their bad faith shall live on, in this negative review.
Take heed from my bad experience before you consider purchasing a book
with an Exam Simulator that can't be used - nor will the company have the graciousness, or the common sense, to replace.
