For those looking for a quick read on the basics of insurance, this is not the book. Written in extensive and at times exhaustive detail Fundamentals of Insurance Planning provides information on all aspects related to personal insurance (home, auto, health, disability, life, liability, etc.), as well as a summary of business insurance, and a foundation of insurance concepts.
This book will commonly be used as a textbook in a classroom setting and has the basic structure of a textbook. There are examples which help to provide insight into the concepts as well as case studies at the end of each chapter. There are additionally questions listed at the end of each chapter which provide a good check on comprehension of material.
One draw back to the questions is that they reference numerical sections in the chapter but the sections are not specified by number. This can make it difficult to find text material relevant to the review questions. In future editions it would probably be good if the authors revise this so that either page numbers are indicated refering to the location of material or section numbers are included at the beginning of each section.
An additional element that would have been nice for visual learners would have been more visual representations of concepts. Some chapters run as long as 50 pages and the information described can be fairly complex. Pictoral depictions of the concepts could have helped comprehension of this dense material.
The subject matter is fairly dry by nature but the information seems to be factual and accurate based on current insurance industry laws and regulations. After finishing this book, you should have a good grasp on the various areas of personal insurance.
